We are two electrical engineering students doing our Master's Thesis as a Minor Field Study on small-scale hydro systems in rural Mozambique. This blog is about the adventures we encounter during our ten weeks abroad, but also about the preparation, all good advice we've got and what might just have been time spent sleepless worring about completely unnecessary things.

Better than Animal planet. Or at least differerent from it.

More things you would never say in Sweden:

- There's no ants in the porridge today? Good work Kajsa!

Before we came her there was a lot of talk about animals. Which ones we would see. Which ones were dangerous etc etc.

And now. What are our animal encounters so far?

In reality:
The cockroaches in the fridge, the mini lizards on the roof next to the balcony, the birds in the parks. The stray cats in the streets and the fluffy dogs walked by diplomats. And a variety of ants.

In tales:
- While talking about investigating new hydro sites: "Well, the first problem you have to solve is not to get killed by a crocodile while walking up the river."
- From our supervisor: "You can never guess what happened the other day! We observed our turbine on ten meters depth and all of a sudden a bunch of hippos came swimming. Hippos are never that deep but I don't think Africa knows that."

Our latest addition to the fauna is a rat in the kitchen. Thibaud just walked into our room with an avocado in his hand saying "Coucou les filles" and turned it around to show how something had chewed on it. Oh, well. Could be worse. And with Lea in our house nothing seem to be a problem. She just said we could get a cat. Or clean really carefully and hope the rat doesn't like the atmosphere after that. I agree.
